The Power of the Word

The academy is gathered
Suited, ageing men going grey
Growing into texts, so bending
And swaying like overbearing trees
And those listening, lost in the forest
The frost settling on the ground
The cold biting, the dark deepening

The care only for ideas
Those of self and others who have threaded
Thought-waves of a similar ilk
Through the silver-surfaced mirror that reflects only
The image of Manifold Unafraid Man's Folly
Singular Wisdom waited a while in the hall and then turned to go
Weeping, as she locked the door to protect those on the outside

(written June 2011, after an academic poetry conference)

Ode to ....

O how tortured was
this man
How few could
understand - even now
it is still the case
[But how more acutely so]
The dying in his voice
Asking what it is
That so unites their
prejudice
161 years on
And - who know?
...
The voice, full worded
[like a living orb]
Pierces Time's artery
...
'Truth comes wholly together, and waits'
'Language needs no shield or sword
But masterpieces'
'The plaster crucifix came of its hook,
Fell like a handful of snow'
'Life is the price of a seat'
'From the top
of my own ruins I say only this'
...
'The spiritual has touch
that which is paved'
...

Reign in our hearts

It is raining
The mountains weep
Why do they cry?
Who have they lost?

The wind blows strong
The birds have flown
Why have they gone?
Who feeds their young?

The mist hangs low
The sky covered
Why the silence?
Who will now speak?

...

O Lord of all
Reign in our hearts
Pour out your love
Heal all our hurts

O Lamb of God
You find us here
The sky has cleared
We no more fear

Worship the King
O bow down now
As heaven sings
Holy Holy ...

Holy art thou

cloud of unknowing

Surrounded by towers
Locked out
Block on block

Children wait
On the far islands
To receive their futures

They hunger and wait
As the city stays wide-eyed
Full of itself

Men talk and talk
Not knowing the knife edge
Nearly touching their rosy cheeks

And so close to the night
We are all folded in
Sin on sin

Never knowing
The children of the far isles
They were our own

[They
Were waiting
For us]

all the human circuses are pouring into town

my friend
said

all the human circuses
are pouring into town …

the bendy one
who is everyone’s best friend

the lion tamer
who creates the illusion of safety

the acrobat
who keeps us enthralled with spectacle

the ringmaster
who commands the space

the freak
who makes us feel normal

…

and let us not forget
the clown

as all the human circuses
are pouring into town …

it's the shiny-nosed
wide-wild eyed

ill-fitting clothed
flat -footed

falling off  their stool
crazy dude

who convinces us
that we are not fools

[ha!]
